The areas of Malta where you can open your own business

If you want to open a business in Malta, you must first take into consideration the tiny size of the Maltese territory and its population (just over 400,000 inhabitants, about a third of Milan).

The most populated cities of Malta are the ones located on the eastern side of the island, especially the areas close to Valletta, the capital of the Maltese Republic (I’m talking about the area of Sliema and St. Julians, which besides being the places with the greatest number of shops are also those most frequented by tourists), so these are the best areas for those who want to open up a shop, or restaurant, and avoid running the risk of low visibility to the public, thus hindering the enterprise from the beginning.

However, these areas are (of course) also the most expensive, as the rent of a 40sqm commercial property in Sliema can run you at least 2500 euros a month, not to mention the staggering rental costs in Valletta, so if you don’t have the sufficient budget for a street storefront property in these areas, we suggest to not settle in any case for less frequented areas, where the customer turnout could be potentially much lower. For example, the distance between the towns of Msida and Sliema is very short, yet if we take similar activities as a sample to examine, we immediately notice how drastically different the volume of business is.

Of course, it’s not impossible to have customers in less frequented areas, but if you open an activity far from the best areas, it will certainly be much more difficult to keep up with the high costs.
